About The Unit

This unit is a core unit for the Certificate II in Information and Cultural Services and the Certificate III in Library and Information Services. The unit introduces you to the skills and knowledge required to identify, select and operate three commercial software packages, including a word-processing and a spreadsheet application package. The unit will cover the following areas:

  • Planning a document, including consideration of organisational branding, layout and formatting
  • Basic-to-intermediate use of Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel (spreadsheets) and Microsoft Access (database) packages
  • Creating letters
  • Spell and grammar checking documents
  • Formatting documents
  • Using tables and formulas
  • Using Help features
  • Mail merging
  • Images, charts and graphics
  • Reporting
  • Data types
  • Relational databases and table relationships
  • Queries and searches
  • OHS Standards when using computer equipment

HOW THIS UNIT RELATES TO YOUR LIBRARY AND INFORMATION SERVICES CAREER

The unit provides very broad information around utilising key software applications. It is designed for people who need to use several different software applications to produce diverse documents within a small to large office environment. The ability to use and present a variety of key software application packages is a key component of any ICT business, office or library and information services environment.

This unit has exceptionally broad applicability across industries and workplace contexts, and will be relevant to any future role you have, both in or outside of Library and Information Services.
