ABOUT THE UNIT 

This unit is a core unit for the Certificate IV in Library and Information Services. The unit provides the skills and knowledge required to use and respect copyright. It covers maintaining control over the copyright owner’s work, commercialising copyright material, preventing the unauthorised use of an original work, and using other party’s original work legitimately. The unit will cover the following areas:

  • Understanding copyright and its application to original works
  • Understanding the legislative requirements and framework governing copyright, and its application nationally and internationally
  • Identifying sources of information and advice regarding copyright issues
  • Determining the rights of copyright owners of original works, including moral rights
  • Identify, maintain and monitor organisational policies and procedures relating to copyright
  • Identify methods for preventing unauthorised use of copyright material, and understand appropriate action to take if a copyright infringement occurs
  • Identify means that ensure original works are protected against direct or indirect infringement of copyright
  • Recognising exceptions that allow the legitimate use of copyright material by others
  • Understand the legal, ethical and economic implications of copyright infringement
  • Understand open source copyright licensing, and the impact of the internet on copyright

HOW THIS UNIT RELATES TO YOUR LIBRARY AND INFORMATION SERVICES CAREER

This unit applies to employees who have a role in ensuring that their organisation’s copyright is protected and/or that their organisation uses others’ copyright appropriately to benefit the organisation without infringing the rights of copyright owners. It is highly important in any Library and Information Services context.

TRANSFERABILITY OF SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE

The skills and knowledge gained from this unit are applicable to any workplace context, whether in the Library and Information Services sector or not. They are also applicable to all library types.
